Add your thoughts using the KWL approach. Thinking about Game Mechanics, Games-Based Learning or gamification.....
K = What do you know?
W = What do you want to learn?
L = What have you learned? (we'll do this last one later)
Reflection
Add your thoughts here and also add to the KWL notes above, where appropriate.
I am enjoying thinking about how fun is created. Not just considering how our bodies have fun with games but seeking to understand why. Where does this fun aspect come from? In who image are we created?
I do like how this technique is similar to the first few steps of the design process.
Fully connecting this process to the theory of the design process.
Level 2
Where do I start?
Identify some learning outcomes that you will be visiting with your students in upcoming lessons. Note down here some ways they might benefit from gamification.
Using a narative, a story.
visual map of of the narative.
Observe and reflect
After playing a game what are your personal thoughts about the design and elements involved and how any of these could help you in thinking about doing the same in a learning activity?
Also considering the game elements pyramid.
Dynamics: Character formation, i want to investigate after a conversation with my yr 8 students who are involved with overwatch characters.
Overwatch also gave me idea about how the story is delivered. Only releasing the next part of the story after reaching new stages.
Mechanics:
creating a story and map with challenges and rewards.
Components:
group work
points system
project based but linked to story challanges.
Level 3
Premiers Reading Challenge Reflection
Write your thoughts here and or print a rubric and circle the appropriate areas you notice as you review the rules of this gamified experience. (feel free to scan or photograph and upload your rubic to this page.)
Evaluation:
Intensity level - 1
Dynamics:
-no narrative
-no emotional connection
-some little interaction
Mechanics:
- Challenge
Components:
- levels - once a year
- Hard Fun
Zombie Learning Reflection

Add your finished plan here as an upload file or as text you have cut and pasted into the wiki. We would love to give you feedback to help you get started. (remember it does not need be perfect, it is a first attempt). Alternatively it can be emailed to us instead.
Evaluation
Know - I now really want to build on the narrative and story.
Want - I really want to build this approach into two subjects together.
Learn - I have learned so much!!!!
Task - design your own game based unit
My idea is to create a game based unit with both Technology Mandatory and HSIE. the unit would be based around a medieval period. Where students are group into family of nobles. The term long unit, would involve a locked narrative, where students have to complete specific quests and tournaments to obtain the next clue and narrative. Each group earns points along the way. The lesson ratio would be 3 practicals with me, 1 with HISE teacher. In my classroom would be a large map, which communicate the layout and where each quest and tournament is but is also will have extra info (regions, dangers and countries). During lessons, students will gain the content from the HISE syllabus and the content from the Technology Mandatory - mixed materials. Activities will include - designing and making a noble family crest, designing and building a shield for each family member, making a catapult, timber swords and problem solving. At the end of the term we will have a climaxed event - Medieval day. Students dress up and we find out the end to the narrative. where the winning team is named the royal family. During our climax event we will hold a feast, catapult races, best dress noble and pillow fight tournament.
I wrote up my unit plan on the Game thinking Planning Template and then delivered to a peer teach at school. the scanned documents contain his response and feed back.
